Briers

 I planted roses but brier flowers bloomed. Instead of big yellow roses, I see brier flowers. Following a cloud of tiny but fragrant white flowers, I find myself in a valley where the sun rises late. The valley is narrow, but the sound of the water is cheerful. Small stones in the clear and bright water. The silver fish are not afraid of my shadow. There is even the long-forgotten dance of a damselfly. The briers stretch out their hands beside a small pool. In this valley, I am shorter than the briers. I raise my heels from the ground to seize a brier stem with its tempting flowers, and place it on my head like a crown. A rain of golden pollen soaks into my soul. My fingers are pricked by the brier thorns and blood spurts out, but my curiosity for the novelty is greater than the pain. Holding the brier branch, I look down into the pool. Into the water like a mirror. A girl wearing a crown of pure white brier flowers is smiling innocently. The crown of brier flowers that I was so eager to wear just once. I look at the girl and nod my head softly. Each time I nod my head, a rain of golden pollen falls into the pool. I can't stay long in the valley where the sun rises late. In order to come back, I hastily release the brier branch. The springing brier branch swings surprisingly far. Brier flowers fall down. All at once, a cloud of white butterflies flying up!

찔레

   이 향 지  

 장미를 심었는데 찔레꽃이 피었다. 크고 노란 장미 대신 보는 찔레꽃. 자잘하나 향기로운 하얀 꽃 떼 따라, 해가 늦게 뜨는 계곡에 있다. 계곡은 좁으나 물소리는 명랑하다. 작은 돌멩이들까지 영롱한 물 속. 은빛 물고기들은 내 그림자를 두려워하지 않는다. 까마득 잊고 있던 실잠자리의 춤까지 있다. 찔레는 작은 웅덩이 옆에서 손을 내민다. 이 계곡에서 내 키는 찔레보다 작다. 꽃송이 탐스러운 찔레꽃대를 까치발 떠서 붙잡고, 머리 위에 화관처럼 얹히게 했다. 금빛 꽃가루의 비가 내 영혼에 스민다. 내 손가락은 찔레가시에 찔려 핏방울이 솟지만, 신기한 것을 즐기려는 호기심이 아픔보다 크다. 찔레나무가지 붙잡은 채 웅덩이 속 내려다본다. 거울 같은 물 속. 순백의 찔레꽃 화관을 쓴 소녀가 천진스레 웃고 있다. 꼭 한 번 써보고 싶었던 찔레꽃 화관. 나는 소녀를 향해 가만가만 고개를 끄떡인다. 내가 고개를 끄떡일 때마다 금빛 꽃가루의 비가 웅덩이 속으로 내린다. 해가 늦게 뜨는 계곡엔 오래 머물 수가 없다. 나는 돌아오려고 찔레가지를 급히 놓았다. 퉁겨진 찔레가지는 놀랄 만큼 크게 흔들렸다. 찔레꽃이 떨어진다. 한꺼번에 날아오르는 하얀 나비 떼!
